Eye-Blink Detection & Acutance Analysis

Identifying micro-expressions, eyelid positions, and facial acutance under eyewear.

A closed eye or awkward mid-blink expression ruins otherwise well-composed frames. BestShots analyzes facial landmarks using high-resolution crops centered on detected subjects:

  • Eyelid Position Analysis: Measures upper-to-lower eyelid aperture distance against canonical facial proportions.
  • Sclera & Pupil Visibility: Confirms presence of reflected specular highlights in the cornea to verify direct engagement.
  • Micro-Expression Classification: Distinguishes natural squinting smiles (Duchenne markers) from involuntary blinks or grimaces.

The Salvageability Heuristic

When focus or lighting deviates from ideal standards, BestShots calculates an aiSalvageable flag:

  • aiSalvageable = true: Minor exposure errors or slight framing imperfections that can easily be rescued in Lightroom via exposure sliders or modest cropping.
  • aiSalvageable = false: Optical motion blur, missed focus where background is sharp and subject is unrecoverably soft, or hard camera shake.

Eyewear & Sunglasses Override Rules

Photographers shooting beach weddings, cycling races, or outdoor sports frequently capture subjects wearing dark sunglasses, visors, or tinted goggles.

The evaluation engine detects eyewear and applies automatic adjustments:

  1. Suspends eye-blink rejection penalties for obscured eyes.
  2. Re-targets sharpness assessment to visible anatomical edges: smile lines, jaw definition, nose bridge, and apparel logos.
  3. Evaluates overall bodily posture and context rather than penalizing unseen pupils.
